Think of your skin-care routine as consisting of three main steps:

  1. Cleansing — Washing your face.
  2. Toning — Balancing the skin.

To say I enjoy skincare would be an understatement.

I have three drawers dedicated to cleansers, an entire cabinet dedicated to serums, and my refrigerator contains more moisturizers than vegetables (sorry, mom).

In this order, I use the following products: makeup remover, cleanser, toner, serum (two different ones: one for morning and one with Retinol at night), acne treatment, eye cream, and moisturizer.

I use a peel once a week and a mask on a regular basis.

While an extreme regimen may appear to be a chore, I adore it.

We, as beauty consumers, have finally realized that no amount of makeup can conceal the consequences of failing to care for our skin – at least the skin on our faces.

My skin is blemish-free and smooth as a result of my strict face routine, but the rest of my body is a different story.

Small breakouts have appeared on my shoulders and lower back.

Because my legs and arms are usually covered in the winter, I’m far too lazy to bother slathering body oil every day.

My elbows are swollen.

My feet are prone to blisters and calluses.

To save time in the shower, I shave my legs without shaving cream or soap.

Step 1: Determine Your Skin Type

-Flaky, scaly, or rough skin is a sign of dry skin.

-Combination skin is dry in some areas (such as the cheeks) and oily in others (forehead, nose, and chin).  After applying makeup or other products to sensitive skin, it may sting, burn, or itch.

-Normal skin is well-balanced, clear, and free of sensitivities.

Step 2: Clean your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry

To wash your face, don’t just grab whatever soap is in the shower or at the sink. Also, don’t feel obligated to purchase high-priced items.

Simply find a skincare regimen that works for you.

Using your fingertips, apply a gentle cleanser or soap.

You should not scrub your face. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

If your skin becomes dry or oily, try a different cleanser.

Choose a cleanser that does not dry out your skin after washing.

If you have dry skin and don’t wear makeup, clean your face no more than twice a day.

Step 3: Toning your Skin

– Apply toner after washing your face.

Toners are another critical step because they replenish the skin with moisture and replace natural oils that were removed by washing.

Gently pat it on, leave for a few minutes before applying moisturizer or makeup.

If you have oily skin, look for an alcohol-free product to avoid over-drying the surface.

– Use a toner that matches your skin type.

If you have dry skin, look for one with moisturizing ingredients and natural oils; if you have oily or normal to combination skin, select an alcohol-free formula without harsh astringents, which can strip the face of needed oils.

Alpha and beta hydroxy acids: are used to gently exfoliate dead skin cells that can clog pores, improve sun-damaged skin, and reduce dullness.

Hyaluronic acid: To treat fine lines, use hyaluronic acid to boost hydration, seal in dewiness, and plump skin.

Rosewater and green tea have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to soothe irritation and reduce redness.

Lotion-like toners for dry skin; gel-based formulas if you have oily or normal to combination skin, select an alcohol-free formula without harsh astringents, which can strip the face of needed oils.

Toners often include ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (which act as a gentle exfoliator), hyaluronic acid (to boost hydration) vitamin E, and C (for their antioxidant properties).

Step 4: Treating Your Skin With Serums


Serums are liquid mixtures that have a concentration of active ingredients, often including an AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) or vitamin C.

When applying serums to your skin make sure you put the serum on clean skin with no lotion or moisturizer and wait at least 15 minutes before putting any other products on top so they can better absorb into the skin.
